About the Author
William Addison Dwiggins (1880-1956) was one of the most influential American designers of the 20th century. He was a master of many disciplines, including typography, illustration, and book design. Dwiggins's work is characterized by its elegance, wit, and attention to detail.
Dwiggins was born in Martinsville, Ohio. He studied art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Académie Julian in Paris. After returning to the United States, Dwiggins worked as a commercial artist and illustrator. In 1922, he joined the staff of the printing firm of Alfred A. Knopf, where he designed many of the firm's most famous books.
Dwiggins was a prolific writer and lecturer on design. He was also a member of the American Institute of Graphic Arts and the Society of Typographic Arts. In 1953, he was awarded the AIGA Gold Medal, the highest honor given by the American Institute of Graphic Arts.
