Early Life and Education

Sagan was born in Brooklyn, New York, on November 9, 1934. He was the son of Jewish immigrants from Ukraine. Sagan's interest in astronomy began at an early age. He would often spend hours stargazing with his father. Sagan attended the University of Chicago, where he earned a bachelor's degree in physics in 1955. He then went on to earn a master's degree in physics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1956 and a doctorate in astronomy and astrophysics from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1960.

Career

After completing his doctorate, Sagan joined the faculty of the University of California, Berkeley. He remained at Berkeley for the rest of his career. Sagan's research interests included the search for extraterrestrial life, the evolution of the universe, and the nature of consciousness. He was a strong advocate for scientific skepticism and the use of evidence-based reasoning.

In addition to his academic work, Sagan was also a prolific author and science communicator. He wrote over 20 books, including The Dragons of Eden (1977),Cosmos (1980),and Pale Blue Dot (1994). Sagan also hosted the television series Cosmos, which aired on PBS from 1980 to 1981. Cosmos was a groundbreaking series that introduced millions of people to the wonders of science.

Awards and Honors

Sagan received numerous awards and honors for his work. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction in 1978 for his book The Dragons of Eden. Sagan was also awarded the National Medal of Science in 1994 and the Templeton Prize in 2001.

Personal Life

Sagan was married three times. His first marriage was to Lynn Margulis, a biologist. They had two children together. Sagan's second marriage was to Ann Druyan, a writer and producer. They had one child together. Sagan's third marriage was to Linda Salzman Sagan, a writer and editor. They had no children together.

Death

Sagan died on December 20, 1996, at the age of 62. He had been diagnosed with myelodysplasia, a type of blood cancer, in 1994. Sagan's ashes were scattered in space in 1997.
