Sócrates Brasileiro Sampaio de Sousa Vieira de Oliveira, better known simply as Socrates, was a Brazilian footballer who played as a midfielder. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest midfielders of all time, and is often included in lists of the greatest footballers of all time. Socrates was also known for his intelligence and his outspoken views on social and political issues, which earned him the nickname "Doctor Socrates".

Early Life and Career

Sócrates was born on February 19, 1954, in Belém, Pará, Brazil. His father was a lawyer and his mother was a teacher. Socrates was a gifted student, and he graduated from high school with honors. He then went on to study medicine at the University of São Paulo.

Sócrates began his football career with the Corinthians youth team in 1973. He made his debut for the Corinthians first team in 1974, and quickly became a regular in the side. Sócrates helped Corinthians win the Campeonato Paulista (São Paulo State Championship) in 1977 and 1979. He also helped the club reach the final of the Copa Libertadores (South American Cup) in 1977.

International Career

Sócrates made his debut for the Brazil national team in 1979. He was a member of the Brazil team that won the 1982 FIFA World Cup. Sócrates scored two goals in the tournament, including a stunning free-kick in the semi-final against Italy. He was also named to the All-Star Team of the tournament.

Club Career

After the 1982 World Cup, Sócrates moved to Europe to play for Fiorentina. He spent three seasons with Fiorentina, and helped the club win the Coppa Italia (Italian Cup) in 1986. Sócrates then returned to Brazil to play for Flamengo. He helped Flamengo win the Campeonato Brasileiro (Brazilian Championship) in 1987 and 1988.

Later Career

Sócrates retired from football in 1989. He then worked as a commentator and a columnist. He also continued to be active in social and political causes. Sócrates died of cirrhosis of the liver on December 4, 2011, at the age of 57.

Sócrates is remembered as one of the greatest midfielders of all time. He was a skilled and intelligent player, and he was known for his vision, passing, and goalscoring ability. Sócrates was also a committed social activist, and he used his platform to speak out against injustice and oppression.
