William Charles Wentworth was born in Norfolk Island on 3 October 1790. He was the son of D'Arcy Wentworth, a surgeon, and Catherine Crowley, a convict. Wentworth's father died when he was young, and he was raised by his mother and stepfather, Reverend Samuel Marsden. Wentworth was educated at The King's School, Parramatta, and then studied law in England.

Wentworth returned to Australia in 1816 and began his political career. He was elected to the Legislative Council of New South Wales in 1824 and quickly became a leading figure in the colony. Wentworth was a strong advocate for responsible government and was one of the leaders of the movement for the separation of Australia from Britain. He was also a passionate advocate for the rights of the Aboriginal people.

In 1840, Wentworth led an expedition to discover an overland route to the Swan River Colony. The expedition was successful, and Wentworth's discovery of the Murray River opened up the interior of Australia to settlement. Wentworth also played a major role in the development of the Australian wool industry. He introduced new sheep breeds to Australia and helped to establish the colony as a major wool producer.

Wentworth died in England on 20 March 1872. He is buried in Westminster Abbey. Wentworth was one of the most important figures in Australian history. He was a man of great vision and energy who played a major role in the development of the colony of New South Wales. Wentworth was a strong advocate for responsible government and was one of the leaders of the movement for the separation of Australia from Britain.
