William Charles Wentworth was born in Norfolk Island on 3 October 1790. He was the son of D'Arcy Wentworth, a surgeon, and Catherine Crowley, a convict. Wentworth's father died when he was young, and he was raised by his mother and stepfather, Reverend Samuel Marsden. Wentworth was educated at The King's School, Parramatta, and then studied law in England.

Wentworth returned to Australia in 1816 and began his political career. He was elected to the Legislative Council of New South Wales in 1824 and quickly became a leading figure in the colony. Wentworth was a strong advocate for responsible government and was one of the leaders of the movement for the separation of Australia from Britain. He was also a passionate advocate for the rights of the Aboriginal people.
