Early Life and Influences

Born in November 1893 in Rawalpindi, British India (now Pakistan),Hardit Singh Malik hailed from a humble background. Despite the limitations imposed upon him as an Indian during colonial rule, Malik harbored an unyielding passion for the skies.

His early fascination with aviation was ignited by the exploits of the famed Wright brothers. Their pioneering flights inspired Malik to dream of soaring through the clouds himself. However, the path to becoming a pilot in the early 20th century was fraught with challenges, especially for someone of Indian origin.

Overcoming Barriers and Enlisting

Undeterred by the obstacles he faced, Malik displayed unwavering perseverance. In 1916, he managed to secure admission to the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) at Brooklands, England. Despite facing prejudice and discrimination at times, Malik's exceptional skills as a pilot quickly earned him respect among his peers.

Combat Duty on the Western Front

In 1917, Malik was deployed to the Western Front, where he joined No. 20 Squadron RFC. Flying the Sopwith Camel, a formidable fighter aircraft, Malik engaged in numerous aerial battles against German pilots. He quickly gained a reputation for his daring tactics and extraordinary flying abilities.

Over the course of the war, Malik flew countless missions and participated in some of the fiercest battles in the skies over Europe. He earned a Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) for his bravery and exceptional service.

Awarded the Victoria Cross

On October 27, 1918, Malik's heroism reached its peak. During a reconnaissance mission over the village of Marcoing, France, he encountered a squadron of German Fokker D.VIIs. Despite being outnumbered, Malik engaged in a fierce dogfight, single-handedly shooting down two German aircraft.

Returning to base, Malik found another German plane attacking a British airfield. Undeterred by the danger, he immediately took off and attacked the enemy aircraft, forcing it to retreat.

Malik's courage and determination in the face of overwhelming odds earned him the prestigious Victoria Cross (VC),the highest military decoration awarded for valor in the British Army. He became the first Indian-born recipient of the VC during World War I.

Post-War Life and Legacy

After the war, Malik returned to India as a national hero. He retired from the Royal Air Force in 1923 and devoted his life to promoting aviation in his homeland. He became a founding member of the Indian Air Force and served as its first Chief of Air Staff.

Malik's legacy extends far beyond his military accomplishments. He became a symbol of hope and inspiration for Indians throughout the world. His story continues to be told today as a testament to the indomitable spirit that resides within us all.
