Nathan was raised in a white foster home in rural Saskatchewan. He was taught to be ashamed of his Cree heritage and to deny his Indigenous identity. As a result, he grew up feeling lost and disconnected from his culture and community.
In his early twenties, Nathan began to question the identity that had been imposed on him. He started to read about Cree history and culture, and he began to connect with other Cree people. This journey of self-discovery was not easy, but it was ultimately life-changing.
In Peyakow, Nathan shares his story with honesty and courage. He writes about the pain of growing up in a racist society, the challenges of reclaiming his Indigenous identity, and the importance of community and connection.
Nathan's story is a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for reconciliation in Canada. It is a story of hope and healing, and it is a testament to the resilience of the Cree people.
