In 1966, China embarked on a decade-long political and social revolution known as the Cultural Revolution. During this time, millions of lives were disrupted, and an entire generation of young people was lost.
Mulberry Child is a memoir of that lost generation. It is the story of a young girl who grew up in a small village in China during the Cultural Revolution. The daughter of a schoolteacher and a doctor, she was raised in a loving home, but her childhood was overshadowed by the chaos and violence of the revolution.
When she was just seven years old, her father was accused of being a "rightist" and sent to a labor camp. Her mother was forced to work long hours in the fields, and she was left to fend for herself.
She spent her days roaming the countryside, foraging for food and hiding from the Red Guards. She lived in constant fear, but she also found ways to find joy and hope in the midst of the darkness.
Mulberry Child is a powerful and moving memoir of a lost childhood and a lost generation. It is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, and to the power of hope.
