Early Life and Career

Pete Seeger was born in New York City in 1919. His father was a musicologist and his mother was a concert violinist. Seeger began playing the banjo at a young age, and he soon became involved in the folk music revival of the 1930s and 1940s.

In 1940, Seeger joined the Almanac Singers, a folk group that also included Woody Guthrie and Lead Belly. The Almanac Singers sang songs about social justice and the labor movement, and they helped to popularize folk music among a new generation of listeners.

The Civil Rights Movement

Seeger became increasingly involved in the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s. He wrote and performed songs such as "We Shall Overcome" and "Mississippi Goddam," which became anthems of the movement.

Seeger was also a vocal supporter of the Freedom Riders, a group of black and white activists who rode buses into the segregated South to challenge Jim Crow laws.

The Anti-War Movement

Seeger was a strong opponent of the Vietnam War. He wrote and performed songs such as "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" and "Waist Deep in the Big Muddy," which protested the war and its human cost.

Seeger was also a key organizer of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963, which was one of the largest civil rights demonstrations in history.

Environmental Protection

Seeger was a lifelong advocate for environmental protection. He wrote and performed songs such as "This Land Is Your Land" and "Rainbow Race," which celebrated the beauty of the natural world and called for its protection.

Seeger was also a member of the board of directors of the Sierra Club, and he helped to organize the first Earth Day in 1970.

Social Justice

Seeger was a tireless advocate for social justice. He wrote and performed songs about the struggles of the working class, the poor, and the oppressed.

Seeger was also a supporter of the labor movement, and he helped to organize the Highlander Folk School, which trained labor organizers and civil rights activists.

Legacy

Pete Seeger died in 2014 at the age of 94. He left behind a legacy of music and activism that continues to inspire people around the world.

Seeger's songs have been recorded by hundreds of artists, and his activism helped to bring about positive change in the United States and around the world.

Pete Seeger was a true American hero, and his life and work should be an inspiration to us all.
