Bumstead was born in Chicago in 1895. He began his career as a commercial artist, but soon found his way to Hollywood. He worked on his first film, "The Ten Commandments," in 1923. Over the next four decades, he would work on over 100 films, including some of the most beloved and enduring classics of American cinema.
Bumstead's work was characterized by its realism and attention to detail. He was known for his ability to create sets that were both visually stunning and historically accurate. He also had a keen eye for color and composition, and his work helped to establish the visual style of Hollywood cinema.
One of Bumstead's most famous works is the set design for "Gone with the Wind." The film's sprawling plantation, Tara, was one of the most iconic sets in Hollywood history. Bumstead's design was so realistic that it was often mistaken for a real plantation.
Another of Bumstead's iconic works is the set design for "Casablanca." The film's Rick's Café Américain is one of the most famous bars in the world. Bumstead's design was so authentic that it was actually used as a bar after the film was completed.
Bumstead's work also had a major impact on the development of the musical film. He worked on some of the most famous musicals of the 1930s and 1940s, including "The Wizard of Oz," "Singin' in the Rain," and "An American in Paris." His work helped to establish the visual style of the musical film, and his sets were often used as a backdrop for some of the most memorable musical numbers in film history.
Bumstead died in 1981 at the age of 86. He was a giant of the film industry, and his work helped to shape the look and feel of Hollywood cinema for over four decades. His legacy lives on in the countless films that he worked on, and his influence can still be seen in the work of today's art directors.
